Controlling DMX Fixtures

I have a show coming up next month where I need to trigger 4 LED light bar scenes when triggering a Liberation clip.

Right now. I built the light bar scenes in Luminair, then just assigning a midi trigger from the APC. While this will work, it’s not ideal for me. I’d rather not have to use two apps.

I know the DMX documentation for Liberation is limited at the moment. So if anyone has any experience with this working, or any information on where to start, I would extremely appreciate it!

Really enjoying the forum. This is a great resource for information!

Thank you!
Kevin

I think the Zoom call June 2023 has the Dmx walk through.

  1. Get an Artnet to DMX node
  2. In liberation -Go to WINDOW menu - in the dropdown is ARTNET SETUP
3)Make sure I.P address on Node is same as the first ARTNET SETUP address.
  3. CLICK + to add your fixture count. If you’re license is hobbiest, you’ll only get 2 DMX fixtures (clone the address on your lamps for 4 fixtures)
  4. Im on mac laptop, but under network setting you’ll need to give the ethernet hub a unique IP.
  5. Get the manual for your light and get the DMX chart
  6. In Liberation window menu, Open DMX zones
  7. In DMX ZONES, this is where you patch your fixture. Create the channels needed, beside the delete button is where you create your fixture profile. Set your X and Y channels if you have, brightness. All other Parameters can use DMX value. Set the channel as it is on your device, Hover your cursor over things and an info box will tell you what is does.
  8. In liberation, create clip. drag a DMX device down. Single device only work on one channel at a time. If you address all you fixtures the same, its quite easy to program your lights. Zone chase will create some awesome effects if you’re modulating parameters. If you’re giving unique address to your fixtures, you’ll need to make a device per fixture and channels you want to tweak.
  9. watch manufacturer videos for more info

Hit ARM button. I hope this helps

Thank you so much! This is a huge help!

I think I am mostly on the right track. I am using a Pknight Art-Net to DMX device, and I’m not sure if there’s any way to check if it’s being detected, other than if it works or not.

I will go through all of these steps again to double check. Anxious to get this working.

I was able to send midi through iac to Luminair, but it’s inconsistent and I’m hoping to use one application.

Thanks again!!!
Kevin

You’ll get it. I used the pknight as well. It will say “link lost” if Ethernet is not found. Use their tutorials, if you get stuck. I learned the newb way to make sure rj45 clip was in fully. Doh

Thanks! Working on it. I can get it to connect to Luminair, but not to Liberation. All of the settings match up, so more troubleshooting I suppose :tada: I secretly love it though :joy:

I searched, but cannot find the zoom call for DMX setup. Any help would also be appreciated!

I feel like I’m so close!

Thank you!!! Looking forward to getting this running.

So I got Liberation to detect my Artnet device and triggering a DMX light bar from a clip. Thank you for all the info!

My next question is…

Is there a way to adjust specific DMX values from a clip? Or do you just have to accept whatever values Liberation is translating to your fixture?

I’ve added the DMX modifier to the clip, but I’m not sure what to connect it to. The only item that will connect is an oscillator or parameter.

Thanks again!
Kevin

Hey Kevin,

the DMX node is for this exact purpose and you can use it to adjust a specific DMX channel.

  1. Add a DMX node into your clip :

  2. Set the value to be whatever value you want to give to your DMX channel. (You can connect an oscillator to it, or just give it a fixed value)

  3. In your DMX zone, edit the profile :

  4. Add a channel and select DMX Value from the drop down list

  5. There are two numbers to the right of the drop down. Hover the mouse to get a hint for what they are. The first number is the ID and it must match the ID that you set in the DMX node in the clip. (probably just choose 1 for now)
    Screenshot 2024-11-25 at 13.03.25

  6. The second number is the default value - if your clip doesn’t have a DMX node for that ID, it will default to this value. (Again, hover over this number to get a hint for what it does - in this screen shot the default )

Hope this helps. DMX by its nature is fiddly and difficult to troubleshoot but hopefully you are getting there!

What fixtures are you using, can you post your Dmx chart here please?

Thank you so much Seb! Everything is now up and running! I needed to assign ID’s per DMX channel. That was the missing piece.

I can’t tell you how much of a game changer this is. Now with everything working, it’s quite genius!

Thanks again!!!

Hello Seb. One thing I noticed.

I am not able to assign ID #8 in a DMX node on a clip, it goes from 7 straight to 9. I tried new clips, deleting my fixture, everything to try and rule out user error. Not a huge deal, but I figured I’d mention it. Thanks again for all the help! Looking forward to posting some results!

Some of the sliders lack the necessary resolution. I’ll look at that in future but for now you can CMD click on the slider and type the value you want.

Thanks once again! That’s very helpful. Somehow missed the capability to do that!
