Brightness not working

First time user here, everything so far is working besides brightness, 0 is off 1 is full brightness.

So there is no adjustment, any ideas why?

Thanks

Hi @carldickson and welcome to Liberation!

If you’re seeing brightness behave like an on/off switch, it could be the laser itself rather than Liberation. Some lasers only support what’s (very unhelpfully) called TTL modulation, which is basically binary – the laser is either on or off, with no smooth dimming in between. With analogue modulation, you’d normally get proper fades and brightness control.

It’s hard to know for sure from here, but it’s a really easy mistake to run into - my first laser was a LaserWorld CS-1000RGB and it drove me mad until I realised what was going on. Aside from being inflexible, it also makes things trickier for safe setup, since ideally you want to be able to zone at low brightness. And these days there’s really no excuse for selling TTL lasers!

Unfortunately there isn’t a software fix for it – the only way to get true brightness control is with a laser that supports analogue modulation. It is possible to upgrade by swapping the laser driver boards, but that’s definitely not for the faint-hearted.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news :sad_but_relieved_face:

(Pretty sure the latest version of the CS-1000RGB is analogue, so this mainly applies to older models. Doesn’t mean I recommend it though lol)

Hi,

Its a Phoenix 3000 Analog Laser System - beamZ via DMX the brigness works fine or is that completly different?

From what I can find its not TTL modulation.

Thanks

Its actually to do with the color calibration, I had them all at 0. The brightness doesnt work then.

Restore to default and it works. I search for docs on how to set this up, I changed it because I didnt get orange and purple on the default.

Thanks

OK, I was completely off-base then!

Just to narrow it down – are you talking about the global Brightness control along the top, or brightness in general for any output? And which DACs are you using?

When you say “beta,” do you mean the 1.0.0 release? Has anyone else run into this? Sounds like it could be a bug. If you can jot down the exact steps that reproduce it, I’ll try it here too.

I was editing my post when you replied, see above

Ah yes that would do it! Oh dammit I have to add that to the manual as well now…

So have you got a quick tip on how to make orange, its more green.

Yeah this is quite common if your red is weak compared to your green. You can try bringing down the 25% 50% and 75% settings for the green. Or try bringing up those values on the red.

It’s kind of a confusing system though - manual section incoming lol.

That did it. I have orange now.

Thanks!!!

When I joined Liberation, I borrowed an old APC40 to get started. Was warned there was one bad fader. Was not told which fader…it was the master. It was always off even when fader was at the top unless you pressed a little harder. It took a while to notice. This was my introduction to the importance of SFS ( Scan fail safe).
