In the DMX profile section, I can see how to change fixed values, ok with 0-255, but to change RGB Colours and XY Positions etc on the other DMX channels of a 7ch fixture, is this done with clip edit i dont see how to change in the porfile section Thanks in advance
Hi James,
There’s a key concept about DMX zones that should help explain why the DMX profile section is feeling confusing.
DMX zones don’t work by manually setting RGB, XY or movement values in the profile. Instead, they convert laser clip content into DMX values, allowing DMX fixtures to follow laser content directly rather than being programmed channel-by-channel.
When you send a clip to a DMX zone, Liberation reads the first element of that clip and extracts whichever properties are relevant to the DMX preset you’re using - for example colour, brightness, or position. Those properties are then translated into DMX channel values according to the preset.
The DMX preset is purely a mapping layer. This is where you define:
- Which DMX channels correspond to which properties (for example RGB, dimmer, pan/tilt if the fixture supports it)
- Which channels use fixed values (fixture mode, macros, speed settings)
- How incoming clip values are scaled into the 0–255 DMX range
You don’t edit RGB, brightness or position values in the profile itself. If you want to change how the fixture behaves, you do that by changing the clip being sent to the DMX zone.
From the user guide:
DMX fixtures are added as DMX zones, which appear in the zone list alongside your laser beam zones and canvas target areas. Each DMX zone uses a DMX preset, which tells Liberation how to map properties from your laser clips - like position, colour and brightness - to DMX channel values.
When you send a clip to a DMX zone, Liberation looks at the first element in the clip and converts its properties based on the preset.
Once that model is clear, DMX zones become a quick and effective way to get lighting effects that stay in sync with your laser content, without needing a separate lighting console.
Best,
Seb
