Hello, I am a new user of the application and first of all I would like to thank you very much for creating it. I created my first show which I am happy with and I am eagerly awaiting the next versions of the Liberation. However, I have a problem, I have not used the computer for 2 weeks and after that time I have very large drops in fps. The computer is old but until now it has been able to maintain a stable 40 frames per second but currently it is a maximum of 18. Unfortunately I did not notice but in the meantime a Windows update may have been installed. I have already tried to reinstall the application and changed the power settings because the computer is a laptop but the difference is marginal. Are there any other possibilities to make changes or is the only thing I can do to reinstall the system?
Hi @djspinni and welcome!
Thanks so much for the kind words, and I’m really glad to hear you enjoyed making your first show with Liberation.
Sorry to hear about the sudden FPS drop - that definitely shouldn’t be happening if nothing major has changed on your end. First off: are you using the same version of Liberation as before, or has it updated since your last session? Let me know.
Otherwise I know that Windows updates can sometimes affect graphics performance, especially if they change your GPU drivers or system settings. Here are a few things you can try before considering a full system reinstall:
- Update or roll back your graphics driver
- Go to Device Manager → Display adapters → [Your GPU] → Right-click → “Update driver.”
- Even if it says it’s up to date, I’d recommend downloading the latest driver directly from your GPU manufacturer’s website (Intel, AMD, or NVIDIA).
- Or, if the slowdown started right after a Windows update, you can try rolling back the driver to the previous version.
- Check Windows Graphics Settings
- Go to Settings → System → Display → Graphics settings.
- If Liberation is listed, make sure it’s set to “High performance.”
- Try a clean boot
- To rule out background apps interfering, try a clean boot:
Press Win+R → typemsconfig→ disable all non-Microsoft startup services.
- To rule out background apps interfering, try a clean boot:
- Minimize background processes
- On laptops especially, background tools or Windows features (like animations or widgets) can unexpectedly drain GPU performance after updates.
- Try an older version of Liberation
- If you’re unsure whether the issue is related to a newer version, older releases are still available on the Download page so you can test and compare performance.
Let me know how you get on - happy to help troubleshoot further if needed!

Its the same latest version 0.9.6. I tried everything, I have updated the graphics drivers, the graphic card is selected as priority. There are no other applications running on the computer.
I found the cause. As I mentioned, the computer is old so the number of frames is low even in optimal conditions. I noticed that the number of frames is significantly affected by the zoom in on the timeline. When the axis is very zoomed in I get 30 frames per second and when it is distant only 17. I checked it on my high-performance PC and the relationship is the same.
Ah this is really useful information thank you @djspinni ! I need to optimise the timeline rendering…
