Working remotely from the East Coast on a gallery installation of two 5w lasers in Madrid. The gallery did not prep well and has communicated to me that the room the lasers are in is “too bright.”. (We usually insist they install them in a dark room). The room most likely is too bright from overhead fluorescents that are unable to be turned off (as opposed to bright sunlight).
They are projecting graphics on the wall.
I have two questions, without being given any more details about the space, if they wanted to rent a brighter laser to combat the lighting in the space, what wattage should they be looking at? I’ve only ever used 2 and 5 w lasers, but I’ve heard some people tell me that the difference from 5w to 10w is not very noticeable and usually have to multiply it by three or four to see a difference, I’m not sure if that’s true in regards to graphics or beams or both.
I’m also wondering if anyone knows where I could find two lasers to rent for 4 days in or near Madrid that are either equipped with an ILDA db25 input (my preference), or has etherdream inside.
Hi Zak,
It’s very unusual for fluorescent lights to blow out projected graphics from a 5W unit. Beams yes, but graphics no.
We use 5W units on many trade and wedding shows, and have never had an issue at that power. Can the gallery send you any pictures to show the issue?
Q1 - You are correct in that you’ll need to go 4x the power for 2x the apparent brightness. You could look at recolouring the graphics to make the most of the eye’s photopic sensitivity to green.
Q2 - No idea, I’m afraid. I know many companies in other regions tour Europe (such as ECS in France), but it may be worth reaching out to an international hire supplier such as LaserWorld.
Hope this helps.
