This is 5 years old, but it came on my radar once again and I’m still as impressed as I was theb.
The process is called banding, and from what I understand, the laser is set to one FPS less than the TV camera, creating a hologram type effect only visible on TV and not live.

SO cool.
doable with liberation?

Yup, it’s a rolling shutter effect.

It looks cool but has been around for many, many years - I remember Rupert Morse doing this well over a decade ago.

Seb describes it perfectly in his 'Stopping A Laser Beam In Mid Air" video: Stopping A Laser Beam In Mid-Air - YouTube

BTW, Adam LaBay gave it the name ‘Laser Banding’ so he could associate that particular term with his work. Adam did the laser work on that Childish Gambino video, and also this one which I think is beautiful work: лазер (laser) — Precision Lasers

yes! Adam did that and the VMAs that year. I’m a Resolume user, and when i saw that SNL, i commented in the FB group and everyone knew it was adam. And I’ve seen it since, each time him. I just introduced him to someone yesterday looking for that effect. They’re actually looking for a banding tech in the UK for July. know anyone?

Thanks for these other links!!

Aah, so you’re Vince!

Yeah, I’m a Resolume user too so we’ve probably met before in that group.

Tom Bass tagged me in that laser banding post so I’m currently chatting with Dale about the job…

HAHAHAHA! Oh hai!

I’ll send you a friend request.

You should be able to get this effect with more or less any laser software, Liberation does have some experimental “frame sync” features in the laser settings dialog that gives a little more control.
