Liberation news and updates January 2025

Happy new year everyone!

After a little time off over Christmas, I’ve come back raring to go, and have had a very productive week.

Laser Cube network protocol

The big news is that I’ve got LaserCube network protocol working, and it’s ready for testing. Expect a new release for testing next week.

Manual

I’ve also been steaming through the manual, and have finished* the Setting Up section that includes

I’m trying really hard to work on this a little every day so keep an eye on progress. If there are any features you really want me to explain, let me know and I’ll work on that section next!

(*These new sections are written but require screen grabs. I found that it’s easier to just get all the writing done first and then the images in a separate pass)

Fixes and improvements

And there have been a lot of other fixes and improvements - here’s the full list :

  • Laser Cube network protocol. Now you can connect your Laser Cube Wifi models directly to Liberation (wired connection strongly recommended - more about this soon)
  • Line / curve zones - my favourite zone got an upgrade! Now you can ALT click on the line to add and delete points. So easy!
  • “In use” detection to avoid connecting to an Ether Dream that is already being used by another app. (This would crash the Ether Dream and you have to power it off and on to reset it!)
  • Single instance - a boring but necessary copy protection feature that stops you running multiple instances of Liberation at once.
  • Lots of bug fixes and interface tweaks.

Other works

In other news, there have been two massive installations running throughout the festive period from @StonewolfActual in Chicago - myself or Dustin will post about those separately. Have you got some cool work to share? I’m about to do a mail out next week so let me know if you have something for me to share!

Thanks for sharing!

I try to avoid Facebook as much as possible because, well, it’s a toxic hellsite. But this week I have heard that many of you have been singing Liberation’s praises across social media. So a massive thank you for that - the laser community is niche, and the only promotion that works is word of mouth. I love to see you all enjoying Liberation and sharing that with your network.

I’ll book in a zoom call within a couple of weeks and aim to get a new version out next week.

Thanks again for your ongoing support, I couldn’t do this without you!

With much love and appreciation,

Seb

Hi, Seb (and all)

This (LaserCube) is great news that we have been waiting for, as you know!

I’m looking forward to download and once again be a user of this brilliant software!
Seb, Liberation is an remarkable achievement that you have pulled out of yourself! Thank you for making this!

We’re gonna test it on 12 cubes, do you have any specific things that you want us to test?

All the best

Frederick,

In my initial testing of the lasercube protocol, the big thing I was looking for is the blanking issues that native to LaserOS. (You know the ones that tend to appear over wifi). My testing didn’t uncover any… in fsct it ran incredibly smooth from the moment I loaded it up the first time and transferred my Cubes from external etherdreams to the internal NIC.

I didnt find anything Id call out of the ordinary, but I was also only running 4 lasercubes. I can’t wait to see how you do with that many. Exciting stuff!

It might also be worth playing with IP settings. Internally we tend to set everything with Static IPs, but we had much better c9nnection success using DHCP and a router on top of the network.

Can’t wait to see your results!
