Liberation news and updates December 2023

Greetings everyone, here’s your news update for December!

I’ve been quietly working away adding a huge number of new features to Liberation in the run up to our big show in Newcastle for the New Year. It’s kind of an intense process because I’m both designing the show and coding new functionality along the way. Oh, and composing the soundtrack as well(!)

There are so many new graphics features, the canvas system is in great shape and works perfectly, that will definitely be in the next release. The timeline is working and reliable but there are a lot of UI refinements and extra features that I want to add. But there will be an experimental version included in the next release.

The 3D system in the patch editor is working really well. Almost all of the patch nodes have 3D options in them now. Dots, lines and shapes can all be moved and rotated in 3D space.

As you can see I’ve also added the canvas into the 3D visualiser to help you build your shows.

There is also a new trails effect, it took a lot of engineering as the patch system has to go “back in time” to see where all the elements were in the past to build up the trails. But now that capability is there, I’ve also added it to the Circular and Grid Pattern nodes, so you can create patterns where each element is delayed. It’s really powerful (and also hard to explain… I’ll show you in the New Year)

There’s also an experimental particle system that is already incredible flexible and powerful. For Newcastle I’m creating a multitude of firework effects using it.

I hate the expression but Liberation is a classic example of eating my own dog food! The issues that I find are fixed before they even get to you. And I understand what it’s like to use software on big shows, with the pressures and intensity endemic to these environments.

I’ve been putting it off but please also note that I will finally be introducing different versions of Liberation for the 3 Patreon tiers so please consider changing your plan to be appropriate to your usage level.

Thank you so much for supporting me through this beta test process, I couldn’t do it without you! Have a great Christmas season if you celebrate it, but either way I hope you have a nice break. I’m gonna get my head back down in the final push for Newcastle and I’ll tell you all about it in the New Year!

Please elaborate on what the different versions of Liberation for the 3 Patreon tiers is ?

best regards
Daniel

Hey @Daniel-DVA, it’ll be based on the number of lasers as described in the patreon tiers (2, 8 and unlimited). You’ll still have the full functionality of the app but the number of lasers you can arm will be limited. I want to make it as forgiving and non-obstructive as possible and more details are to come in the new year.

Oh I should add that up until now it’s been based on an honour system so as long as you put yourself in the right tier, you won’t be affected. Hope this helps!

Can you move between the patreon levels if needed.?

It will be possible to change tiers. But you’ll have to wait for the new year for details!

Wow! 3D and timeline and improved graphics support, that sounds utterly amazing!

I had one small change request, and that’s that it would be possible to keep seeing the mapping view while in the Patch editor, for those situations where the patch is for graphics instead of beams, but from the looks of it you already have this covered?

Have a great New Year’s Eve, and a fantastic 2024!

Thanks Lex! Yes you can see the “canvas” view under the patch editor, and I’ve also added the canvas into the 3D view as well. Needs a bit of tidying up though

Looks awesome!
Are we going to get these firework clips like you show in the screenshot? They look fantastic!

Thanks @jacksolleguitar! The firework clips will be there eventually, probably in the release after the next one. Also bear in mind that they were projected using 10 lasers so I’ll try to make some simpler ones that work with a single laser.

Seb

Great! There are one or two now that kinda look like fireworks and work well with a single laser so I will start with that and see where I can take it

Also I wanted to ask you how do you program the clips in Liberation to follow the music? Or are you switching the clips in real time?

Experimental timeline feature hopefully will be in the next release.

It’s functional but the interface needs a lot of refinement.
