Ether Dream fixed IP Address

Hello everyone,

Have you ever assigned fixed IP addresses to your Etherdreams?

I’ve always used a DHCP server, but for reliability reasons, I prefer to have fixed addresses for each Etherdream. On the website, they say to connect via USB and create a file with the desired address. But I would like your feedback and the exact steps to follow… Has anyone here already done this?

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP

Connect the USB

you should then see a mass storage device appear on your pc.

Open this an dcreate a new text file called ip.txt (I think you cna also dl from th eed website)

The file needs to be edited to contain the info you need for your network but should read as per this example below

ip 192.168.1.92
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.1

thats all it needs to contain - obvs with eaxh device having your selected IP

Save the file to the ED and disconnect.

Hi,
No, it doesn’t work. My file ip.txt contains this:

ip 192.168.0.106
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.1

As you can see, it’s the manufacturer’s IP address. I tried it with all my Etherdreams, and it’s the same problem.

When you use a network without a router you also have to give your computer a fixed IP address that is on the same subnet.

(I’ve personally found this to be awkward and unreliable which is why I always recommend using a router. But if you’re good at networking there’s no reason why you can’t get it working without one)

Hi Seb, yes, I used to do that before. But here, with my 8 etherdreams, there are bugs and glitches in the rendering. I thought it was a network problem, and to be sure, I’d like to do everything with a fixed IP address.

I would say yes it’s definitely a network problem.

So two things here:

  1. If youre on a mac. Turn off your wifi or make sure to set your service order to have your ethernet NIC Set as the first device in the network stack. (This has been an issue for me before, and usually turning off the wifi is enough to allow connection, once liberation connects you can turn your wifi back on)

  2. I would try using an IP that doesn’t contain a 0 as an octet. For examples go to 192.168.1.xxx. and not use 192.168.0.xxx. I dont know why, but Ive had problems with that setup. Also, no need to set a gateway since Liberation isnt trying to talk to an external IP like the internet.

You definitely DONT need a router or DHCP, you just need to use valid network settings.
