Verifying scanner specifications on cheap lasers

Hi Robert,

I’ve written a longer article to explain this more thoroughly, but the key things to consider are:

  • Point rate is not a way to stress test scanners in Liberation.
  • Even in older versions that didn’t adapt the point stream, the PPS didn’t necessarily correspond with the 50k at 8º type scanner specifications.
  • Running the stream at 50KPPS is meaningless if the point stream is rendered such that it is still moving the scanners slowly.
  • Real-world results over time are much more meaningful than a quick test like this. A simple pattern can look perfect at high PPS without actually being a demanding signal.
  • The cutoff you saw above ~50K is probably a quirk of the DAC implementation. Scanners don’t usually have a hard “limit” like that - they just become unstable/overheat/break if pushed too far.

I can’t stress this enough:

Unlike traditional software, POINT RATE is not analagous to SCANNER SPEED in Liberation.

If you do want to test scanners in a more meaningful way, the ILDA test pattern at a known scan angle is still the closest thing we have. But proceed with extreme caution. You’ll need to use some other software though - Liberation can’t do these kind of tests.

Also I did just want to say that it’s great that you’re experimenting and sharing results. This stuff is confusing, and most of us have gone through the same thought process at some point :slightly_smiling_face:

All the best,

Seb
